MTHOMB'NGASHI is a registered Non-Profit Organization (NPO) born out of a deep concern for the children and vulnerable residents of Jeppestown. Founded in October 2023 by Director M.J. Shongwe, our journey began with a simple but urgent realization: too many children in Jeppe Park were facing the harsh realities of neglect and hunger.
What started as a small initiative—preparing and sharing sandwiches every Sunday with the support of Cornerstone Church—has blossomed into a vital community lifeline. Today, while our headquarters are currently located at the Jeppe Train Station Hall, our heart remains in the streets and parks where our neighbors need us most.
We believe that consistent care is the foundation for restoration. Our work focuses on three primary pillars of support:
Nutrition is the first step toward dignity. Every Sunday, we provide fresh, nutritious meals to our community. In a beautiful display of local solidarity, our bread supply now relies on the incredible generosity of neighbors through our door-to-door donation drives. This grassroots support, combined with fresh produce from El Karma Fruit & Veg, allows us to serve dozens of families weekly at Jeppestown and Troyville Park.
Through our biannual partnership with Cornerstone Church, we facilitate large-scale clothing drives. We ensure that families have access to quality clothing and blankets, protecting the most vulnerable against the elements and providing a sense of pride.
Though we are currently based at the Jeppe Train Station Hall, MTHOMB'NGASHI is an organization on the move. We are constantly looking for ways to expand our reach across Johannesburg. Our goal is to create permanent centers of hope where food security, social support, and community development go hand-in-hand.
Compassion: We lead with our hearts in every interaction.
Consistency: We show up every week, rain or shine.
Community: We believe that local problems are best solved by local hands.
Dignity: We serve our neighbors with the respect they deserve.
"Hope is a seed. When we water it with community support and nourish it with consistency, it grows into a future for us all." — M.J. Shongwe, Director
